I have bought 3 houses so far in my life, and in all of them, one of the first things that I do to personalise the house when I move in, is to rip up all of the carpets and take them straight to the nearest domestic refuse tip. I then look sternly at my husband who has to take a trip to the nearest professional tool hire shop and hire an industrial floor sander and buy hundreds of pounds of sandpaper. Several days later and much swearing from my husband we have some beautiful floor boards. Most recently, we actually hired a professional to do the job rather than do it ourselves and he has done a marvellous job. The deal closer is that he managed to plug all the gaps between the floorboards with slivers of wood so that it is entirely draught free.
Why wooden floors rather than carpets? Well, the single strongest argument for me is that I have three young and very messy children. After each mealtime I find myself grovelling around on the floor picking up bits of pasta and tomato sauce, not to mention spilt orange squash and other substances that are less appetising. I’ve also got a very muddy garden and 3 chickens that need feeding every day – walking mud into the house id a constant issue as is wheeling the muddy wheels of the pushchair in through the front door.
One problem though is that the children are all pretty fierce and have no appreciation of the beautiful wooden floors. If you find yourself in this predicament, I can recommend rounding up their heavier metal toys and putting them upstairs where you still have carpets. For downstairs, I’ve gone for some floor friendly wooden toys such as wooden puzzles, toy kitchen and dolls houses. This means I am a little less heart broken by huge gouges in the beautiful floors as hefty metal trucks are hurled about!
